After your free sleep apnea consultation with Dr. Steinmetz, she may take impressions for your oral appliance or refer you to a local sleep center for over night monitoring. The sleep testing and the oral appliance is most often covered by medical insurance.  If a patient is diagnosed with sleep apnea, Dr. Steinmetz will discuss and recommend treatment options, as there are typically 3 options.  Dr. Steinmetz works closely with other providers such as sleep medicine physicians, ear nose and throat physicians (ENTs), and orthodontists if there are other factor involved.

Dr. Steinmetz is a preferred dentist for the SomnoDent MAS sleep appliance - the comfortable, effective, custom treatment for sleep apnea (as seen in the three photos above). This particular appliance is FDA approved for treating mild to moderate sleep apnea, as well as those with serious sleep apnea who can not tolerate CPAP for a variety of reasons.

The SomnoDent MAS is a custom-made device, consisting of upper and lower dental plates with a unique patented fin-coupling component, which allows normal mouth opening and closing. If required, a part can be added to make the device adjustable. This feature provides incremental and adjustable levels of lower jaw advancement, which improves the effectiveness and comfort-level of treatment as the jaw is moved only as far as is required to alleviate snoring and reduce OSA. Key features and benefits of the device include:

  • Permits normal mouth opening
  • Allows speech and drinking
  • Provides full lip-seal
  • Easily adjustable
  • Safe and effective
  • Clinically proven
  • Custom-fitted

The most common treatment for sleep anea has been a CPAP machine.

A CPAP is a positive pressure mask that is worn over the mouth and nose while you sleep. While very effective at treating severe sleep apnea, most patients find it invasive and uncomfortable.
